The Ghana Police in collaboration with some security forces have embarked on a raid to arrest some foreign nationals claiming to be inhabitants in various locations at Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region.
The exercise organised last Sunday took two hours to bring out all these nationals and was spearheaded by the Ghana Police Service of the Upper East Divisional Command with the help of the Ghana Immigration Service, the Ghana Armed Forces and the National Intelligence Bureau. In all, about 500 foreigners were nabbed with 18 being Burkinabes and the rest being Nigerians.
This was for the purpose of regulating and checking crime activities which have become prevalent in the region. These crimes include armed robbery which is targeted towards mobile money vendors and the snatching of motorbikes. In an article sighted on Graphic online, most of the cases recorded, particularly robbery used unregistered motorbikes to aid in their crimes.
ASP Fianko Okyere of the Upper East Regional Command explained that the team is going to continue with its operation as a means to curb the social menace affecting the livelihood of the inhabitants. “Let me remind that our robust operational strategy is still in force and so you will continue to see snap checkpoints, 24-hour patrol by uniformed men and plain cloths intelligence-gathering personnel in the streets and everywhere in the Upper East Region”.
The Ghana Immigration Service also advised that Ghanaians should be careful about their interactions with foreigners in light of the recent jail break of the 1,800 Nigerians who have now become fugitives wanting a better place to hide from authorities.
