Trouble Looms As NDC Northern Caucus Tells John Mahama The Hard Truth And Reject Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang As Running Mate For 2024 Elections

-

In a significant development within the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the Northern Caucus has unequivocally rejected the proposed candidacy of Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang as the running mate for former President John Dramani Mahama in the upcoming 2024 elections. The decision was conveyed during a recent meeting with Mahama, where concerns and reservations about the selection were discussed.

The meeting, held ahead of Mahama’s fundraising trip to Canada and the United States, brought to light several apprehensions regarding the choice of Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, who had previously partnered with Mahama during the 2020 elections but failed to secure victory in her home base, the Central Region.

Dissatisfaction among caucus members centered around Opoku-Agyemang’s perceived limitations and suitability for the role, prompting them to advise Mahama to reconsider his decision. Opinions were divided, with some suggesting the need to look beyond the Central Region for a candidate who could broaden the party’s appeal.

During the discussions, a senior caucus member emphasized the changing political landscape, cautioning Mahama about the potential impact of Vice President Bawumia in the Northern Region and urging strategic efforts to secure votes in NPP strongholds, particularly in the Ashanti Region.

A member of the NDC Council of Elders bluntly warned Mahama of the risk of repeating the party’s embarrassing defeat in the 2016 elections if necessary changes were not implemented. The council member emphasized the need for a closer alignment between Mahama’s office and the party, urging a review of the inner circle for a more effective campaign.

Reports also indicate concerns about the distribution of power within Mahama’s inner circle, with accusations of favoritism potentially jeopardizing the party’s electoral prospects. The meeting, however, concluded without a clear resolution.

Former President Mahama assured caucus members that he had taken note of their concerns and would address them upon his return from the USA. Meanwhile, there is a growing call within the party for a running mate from the Ashanti Region, with figures like Akwasi Oppong Fosu emerging as potential candidates.

Other individuals reportedly vying for the running mate position include Eric Opoku, supported by Lordina Mahama; Julius Debrah, a former Chief of Staff from the Eastern Region; and Samuel Sarpong from the Ashanti Region.

The NDC is yet to release an official statement regarding the rejection of Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, leaving uncertainty about how Mahama and the party leadership will respond to the concerns raised by the Northern Caucus. The evolving dynamics within the NDC hint at potential shifts in the party’s strategy as the 2024 elections draw closer.
