Parliament will summon examinations authority, the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), to answer concerns about how five papers in the present West African Senior School Certificate Examination were reportedly leaked, according to Akatsi North Lawmaker Peter Nortsu-Kotoe (WASSCE).
Mr Nortsu-Kotoe told TV3 on September 15 that the parliament’s Education Committee will summon WAEC to the chamber next week.
This comes after the Africa Education Watch (Eduwatch) petitioned the Ghana Police Service’s Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to look into the matter.
Eduwatch is requesting that the CID “examine the source of the overnight and dawn leakage of five exams, including today’s rescheduled Physics paper 2, Food and Nutrition 3, English Language 2, Elective Mathematics 2, and NABTEX English 2,” according to Eduwatch.
WAEC was forced to reschedule two papers on Wednesday, September 15, due to what it claimed as exam irregularities.
The Council was concerned that the documents, which dealt with physics and business management, would be leaked.
“The cheating social media groups were in full gear before to the conduct of the mathematics and English language papers on September 9th and 13th September 2021,” George Ohene-Mantey, the Head of the Council’s Test Administration Division, stated at a news conference.
“Surveillance of the various versions [of suspected leaks] received after the exam administration revealed that snippets of parts of the questions in mathematics optional two and section A of English Language two were shared on social media platforms.”
Eduwatch, which has been critical of the situation and has advocated for reforms, has requested that the security agency take up the case.
“We are unable to reveal the contents of our Petition because it may jeopardize ongoing investigations. We will continue to work with government authorities to promote accountability and legitimacy in Ghana’s pre-tertiary assessments sector,” said Kofi Asare, Executive Director of EduWatch, on his Facebook page.
