Christian Council of Ghana, Ghana Medical Association admonishes Ghanaians to observe covid 19 protocols amidst Easter celebrations
The Easter festivity is an annual Christian celebrations which marks the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The celebrations comes with a number of holidays which makes the celebrations joyous unlike other holidays. Due to the nature of the holidays, churches tend to organise Easter conventions and events outside the domain of their chapel which normally last for a period of one week and over. These conventions attracts large crowds filled with an atmosphere of dancing, praises and merry which is in connection with the Christian belief that the Saviour of man, Jesus Christ came to die for the redemption of mankind and most importantly rose up again on the third day signifying his victory over death. However, due to the emergence of the deadly covid 19 such gatherings are no longer safe due to the fact that the virus has the tendency of spreading quickly and widely especially in overcrowded areas.
For this reason the Christian Council of Ghana (CCG) has asked churches to limit the Easter celebrations to Chapel activities. In a statement signed by Reverend Dr. Paul Kwabena Boafo Chairman of the CCG featured in a report by the Ghana News Agency, the council has admonished Christians to continue observing measures put in place by the president on banning of all social gatherings and strictly abiding to all the covid 19 protocols put in place to curb the pandemic.
“These activities have the tendency to spread the virus hence could be celebrated quietly in our chapel buildings while adhering to the protocols” they added that “We encourage all members to avoid crowded places and stay at home as much as possible, before, during and after the Easter festivities. We should also limit Easter-related travels and family reunions as much as we can”.
In recent times, news of the spread of the pandemic has declined giving others the notion that the virus has died out. As such, people are preparing to celebrate the occasion in a grand style since they could not do so in 2020 as the country was under a period of lockdown.
Based on this information, the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has also added its voice to the lot admonishing Ghanaians to adhere to the covid 19 protocols during the Easter festivities to prevent the spread of the virus.
In a statement signed by the President of GMA, Dr. Frank Ankobea and the General Secretary of GMA Dr. Justice Yankson, the association urged Ghanaians to avoid activities and gatherings “such as church conventions, picnics, beach parties and other forms of celebrations usually seen in the Kwahu enclave”.
The association said “The pandemic is still a major health threat and we urge all to strictly observe all covid 19 preventive measures, such as social distancing, use of face mask, hand washing under running water with soap and use of alcohol based sanitizers”, on that note “The GMA wishes all Ghanaians a happy Easter. Let us celebrate the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ with caution at this time of global health pandemic”.
