No Government Appointee Should Engage In Any Form Of Mining – Mahama Warns

-

President John Dramani Mahama has warned his appointees to refrain from engaging in any form of mining activity.
Speaking at the launch of the Tree for Life Reforestation Initiative in the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipality on Friday, March 21, 2025, he emphasised that any appointee who violates the directive will face severe consequences.

“I have directed that no government appointee at any level should engage in any form of legal or illegal mining. If you want to be a miner, leave government and go and be a miner. You can’t be in government and be a miner at the same time. And I wish to reiterate that any government appointee found violating this directive will face swift and severe sanctions, including possible removal from office”, he noted.

President Mahama further reaffirmed his government’s commitment to tackling illegal mining activities popularly known as galamsey.

“Our commitment to afforestation must be accompanied by strict environmental law enforcement. And this is why, under my administration, we will sustain the fight against illegal mining,” he added.

The government has launched the “Blue Water Initiative” and the training of the first batch of “Water Guards” as measures to help combat the environmental impact of illegal mining.

The initiative seeks to restore and protect the environment while rehabilitating polluted water bodies.
