Lands Minister instructs all mining equipment evacuated from forest reserves

-

The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources have announced that all mining equipment at any forest reserve should be evacuated from the site latest by 30th April.
He made this statement during a meeting with small scale miners and other stakeholders in the mining industry at Tarkwa. The Minister therefore appealed to the traditional leaders of such zones to help eradicate the canker as the current situation is a general one of national concern which needs to be dealt with by all.
The traditional leaders in Tarkwa also pledged to do their part accordingly however, the small scale miners also expressed their concerns about the lack of available lands for mining as well as financial support which the Minister assured it will be resolved.
In recent times, there have been a wakeup call to protect our water bodies from the activities of galamsey operators. The country is heavily dependent on these water bodies for various activities including direct consumption. Most of our natural water bodies have not only turned muddy but contain a lot of chemicals from these mining activities and gradually, the country is losing such a major resource.
In some years to come when all our water bodies are contaminated, let us ask ourselves how we are going to irrigate the farms for food production? How will our livestock be fed and how the human race in the country is going to survive? Knowing that there is a critical shortage of water supply in the system, what will then be the cost of water and how many people can afford enough of it without breaking a sweat? Let us help save our water bodies today to continue enjoying tomorrow.
