Family Of Fmr. Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta Alleges Abuse Of Power By Special Prosecutor’s Office
The family of ex-Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has publicly accused the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) of misusing its authority in what they describe as a “premeditated vendetta” targeting the former government official.
In a statement issued, the family condemned the issuance of an INTERPOL Red Notice against Ofori-Atta, labeling the OSP’s actions as violations of due process, constitutional protections, and international legal standards.
According to the family, they have formally petitioned the National Central Bureau and the Commission for the Control of INTERPOL’s Files (CCF) to have the Red Notice withdrawn immediately. They contend that the notice was secured through manipulated evidence and the deliberate withholding of critical medical information.
They further assert that the arrest warrant issued on February 11, 2025 accusing Ofori-Atta of “using public office for private profit” was obtained under irregular conditions, notably without an accompanying affidavit.
According to the family, the OSP’s announcement branding Ofori-Atta a fugitive from justice was made first via a media briefing, a move they argue lacks legal foundation.
“This declaration is currently being contested in proceedings before the Human Rights Court, with a judgment anticipated on June 18,” the statement read.
The family highlighted that Ofori-Atta has been receiving treatment for cancer at the Mayo Clinic in the United States, a condition diagnosed earlier this year following complications from COVID-19 in 2021.
They explained Ken Ofori Atta was scheduled for surgery on June 13, 2025, and had requested a video-recorded interview instead of an in-person appearance due to his medical condition.
“Rather than respecting the medical records shared and permitting a virtual engagement as permitted under law, the OSP chose to portray a man scheduled for surgery as a fugitive.”
They accused the OSP of intentionally concealing Ofori-Atta’s medical records and rejecting offers for remote cooperation, instead orchestrating what they described as a “public lynching” designed to disgrace him.
The family revealed that on June 3, they filed a new lawsuit challenging both the validity of the arrest warrant and the conduct of the OSP.
They are also questioning whether the OSP disclosed ongoing court cases, medical evidence, or the cancer diagnosis to INTERPOL before requesting the Red Notice.
The family noted “Had these been disclosed, the INTERPOL filing would have violated Articles 2 and 3 of its constitution, which protect the right to health and prohibit political abuse.
The family continued “Mr. Ofori-Atta has never fled from accountability. He stood firm before CHRAJ, Parliament, and ECOWAS Court inquiries and was cleared each time,” the statement noted. “This is not justice. This is vengeance.”
