Over 1,000 Boxes Of Tramadol Intercepted In Nalerigu, Six Suspects Arrested

The North East Regional Police Command has intercepted 1,195 boxes of Tramadol Hydrochloride 120mg, popularly called “Red”, and arrested six suspects in a major anti-narcotics operation at Gbintiri near Nalerigu.

A statement issued by the police indicated that the operation, conducted in partnership with the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), took place on September 18, 2025, when two trucks suspected of transporting illicit substances were intercepted.

The vehicles, with registration numbers GR 1712-16 and AW 4417-14, had been loaded in Sankase, Republic of Togo, and were bound for Gbintiri.

According to the police, they identified the suspects as Alhassan Braimah, Yakubu Muntaka, Abdulai Shakur, Mumuni Iddrisu, Mumuni Yakubu, and Moses Ayorik.

“A search of the trucks uncovered the 1,195 boxes of Tramadol Hydrochloride 120mg, popularly known as ‘Red,’ concealed among other goods in the truck with registration number GR 1712-16. The exhibits have since been secured for evidential purposes,” the statement noted.

It added that investigations so far indicate that the drugs were destined for Moses Ayorik, who was to deliver them to another individual based in Gushegu. During interrogation, the suspects reportedly admitted their roles in the smuggling operation.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Robert Anabik Anmain, Public Affairs Officer for the North East Regional Command, confirmed that all six suspects are in custody, assisting with investigations. He added that efforts are underway to track down other individuals believed to be linked to the syndicate.

The police command assured the public that it remains committed to clamping down on the trafficking of restricted drugs, which pose severe risks to public health and safety, especially in northern Ghana.
