DVLA To Remove Year Of Registration From Ghana’s Vehicle Number Plates Starting 2026

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has announced that beginning January 1, 2026, all newly registered vehicles in Ghana will have number plates without the year of registration.
The decision is part of the DVLA’s effort to modernize Ghana’s vehicle registration system, improve database efficiency, and align with international best practices in road transport management.
According to the authority, the current number plate format, which includes the registration year, will be replaced with a simplified system that focuses on enhanced digital tracking and security.
Existing vehicles will continue using their current plates until they are due for re-registration or renewal. After that, all vehicles will be required to adopt the new plate design.
DVLA officials explained that removing the year from the plates will help reduce forgery, streamline administrative processes, and create a more consistent national database. The move is also expected to improve integration with digital vehicle identification systems that are being developed to combat fraud and illegal registration.
Vehicle owners and the general public are advised to stay informed as the DVLA is set to release detailed guidelines on the new plate format, registration process, and applicable fees in the coming months.
This policy marks a significant shift in Ghana’s transportation system, reinforcing the country’s commitment to adopting modern technology and global standards in public service delivery.
