MTN directive on transacting with ID card and matters arising

-

MTN Ghana have finally kicked start the use of an ID card to help in the Mobile Money transaction as a directive to reduce fraudulent activities from some customers.
The directive was pre-informed in about weeks to create awareness on the essence of the new initiative. However, a segment of the public have expressed their displeasure on having to carry an ID card around all the time whereas others approved of the system without much complain.
As part of the social commenters, an outspoken member of the NPP, Mr. Patrick Kwarteng Sarpong has also added up his voice on the new initiative of the wide known mobile network. He expressed that the current measure taken is no better as they perceived as customers have put in place strategies to carry out their transactions without having to provide ID cards.
“The MoMo vendors have lined up their own ID cards from wherever and are using same to withdraw and send monies for customers. What this means is that, with or without an ID card, these vendors can withdraw or send for you because they have ID cards other than the ones bearing the details of customers. I ask, with such a porous system, how do you ensure that whatever informed this directive of yours is achieved?” he admonished that the communications company make some changes on the directive or cast it away. “You either strengthen this system or you abandon this idea and come up with a more robust system next time round”
MTN MoMo has been in existence in Ghana for more than a decade and has facilitated the use of electronic system to make transactions easily without necessarily using physical cash. Despite its great benefit, fraudsters have found its way into the system to hack people’s account and engage in dubious means to rob people off their monies. But on the brighter side, the system has been effective over time.
