President Tinubu Announces 50% Fare Reduction for Christmas and New Year Celebrations

President Bola Tinubu has greenlit a substantial 50% reduction in land transportation fares across the nation. The fare cut, effective from December 21 to January 4, 2024, encompasses the festive season, including Christmas and New Year celebrations.

Furthermore, the President has gone a step further by approving zero fares for train transportation throughout all states of the federation during the same period. This decision aims to facilitate easier and more affordable travel for citizens during the festive season.

The announcement was made by Mr. Dele Alake, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, during a briefing at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. Alake highlighted the collaborative efforts involved in implementing this initiative, emphasizing coordination between the Minister of Transportation, transport unions, and luxury bus owners.

This presidential initiative is to give succor to the masses,” Alake stated. “It is on record that the masses don’t patronize air travel. This program is not beyond the affordability of the government.”

As the holiday season approaches, this move is expected to ease the financial burden on travelers, promoting increased mobility and enabling more Nigerians to partake in the joyous celebrations. The video briefing attached to the announcement provides additional insights into the logistics and details of this significant fare reduction initiative.
